Rugged Cross Wins 2015 Winter Stakes in Sydney

July 20th, 2015

Leading trainer Chris Waller has capped another memorable season in the best way possible at Rosehill Gardens over the weekend; saddling talented gelding Rugged Cross to success in the featured Winter Stakes (1400m).

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Brenton Avdulla settled Rugged Cross in prime position on the heels of the 2015 Winter Stakes’ early leaders; receiving an ideal run in transit but arriving on the final straight with plenty to do.

Appearing to be blocked for a run, Avdulla threaded the Cape Cross gelding through the field before the six-year-old produced a monumental turn of foot to hit the line between race favourite Two Blue and a brave Wouldnt It Be Nice, winning by the bob of a head.

Waller was understandably thrilled with Rugged Cross’s performance in the 2015 Winter Stakes and was quick to lay the praise on the talented runner and a first rate ride from Avdulla.

“He’s no superstar but he is a very important horse for the stable because he is constantly winning prizemoney,” Waller said after the race.

“It was a lovely ride by Brenton. From the good barrier, he could ride the horse quietly, conserve energy and time his run.”

Waller has been pleased with the progression of his stable over the last season but remains confident there are still improvements to be made ahead of the 2015 Spring Carnival.

“It has been pretty special, that is all I can say,” he added.

“As I have said time and time again I have a great team. Whether I am in Sydney, Melbourne or overseas, my team keeps it all going.

“I feel going to Aidan O’Brien’s at Ballydoyle in November and to England in June and July with Brazen Beau has been close to a career highlight for me.

“So it has been a fantastic year and we are still learning.”

In taking out the 2015 Sydney Winter Stakes, Rugged Cross has now posted six wins and ten minors through 26 career starts.
