She didn’t do it easy but class prevailed in the Tattersall’s Tiara 2013 on Saturday June 22 with Chris Waller’s million dollar earner Red Tracer finally scoring her first Group 1 trophy.
Waller easily finished the 2013-14 Australian Racing Season as the most capped Group 1 winning trainer with the weekend’s $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) his ninth elite level for the year.
It was however Dane Shadow five-year-old Red Tracer’s first, the always honest mare lining up at the highest level for the 10th time in the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival classic.
Coming off a tight victory over a similar field at the same track and distance for the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes, Red Tracer and jockey Nash Rawiller combined again at Eagle Farm this time winning at Group 1 level in the last of the season.
From another horror outside draw, Red Tracer jumping from 16 of 16 in the Tiara, she got far from a clear run setting a little deep in fifth.
On the straight however she went up through the middle avoiding the inside shortcut and showed a great turn of foot over the final 100m to draw away and score that elusive Group 1 winners’ title.
Red Tracer ($4.80) eventually hit the line two and a quarter lengths ahead of the Guy Walter-trained favourite Streama ($4.40), ridden by Hugh Bowman, who was far from disgraced having run third the start before in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) up against the boys.
Finishing off the winning Tattersall’s Tiara trifecta just a long neck further away was then the Peter Moody-trained Floria ($21), second in the Dane Ripper the start before, who nudged out Streama’s last start Emancipation Stakes winning stablemate Skyerush ($12) for the last of the minor placings.
Waller was thrilled to take home another Group 1 for the season but especially so as he believed Red Tracer the most deserving of a win at the highest level of any horse.
“She’s been around the mark in some very good Group 1 races throughout her career,” he said.
“She’s a very good horse…no horse is more deserving than her.”
Rawiller agreed and was also happy for himself, the trainer and of course the horse.
“She had her game face on,” Rawiller said after the Tattersall’s Tiara result.
“Very satisfying, she’s a lovely mare.
“She’s only little and just such a bulldog, just so wrapped she could win today.
“I’ve never rode a more deserving horse.”
Always on show during the big carnivals, Red Tracer will now enjoy a break before coming back for a spring where Waller hopes more Group 1 trophies await before her retirement.
“This will be a springboard into better things in the spring,” he said.
