Irish Dream Wins 2012 Winter Stakes

July 18th, 2012

Irish Dream recorded the first black-type success of her career on Saturday, taking out the Listed $100,000 2012 Winter Stakes (1400m).

It came at the perfect time for the five-year-old mare, who was transferred to Sydney trainer Ron Quinton last year with the aim of increasing her stud value.

The daughter of Falbrav did exactly that on Saturday, storming home down the outside to score top honours in front of race favourite See The World.

It was a case of a mission accomplished for Quinton, who admitted great satisfaction at the win.

“She was sent to me to win a black type race so she’s done that now,” Quinton said.

“That was the ultimate [aim] for her and she’s a valuable mare now.”

Despite favourite See The World stepping up to the distance for the first time, he was heavily backed by punters around the country.

But Irish Dream jockey Glyn Schofield was always confident the mare could topple the favourite and knew it was game over with 200 metres to go.

“The fact he was up in distance I thought he would be out of juice in the straight,” Schofield

“When I attacked him at the 200 [metres] I was confident my horse would win.”

Schofield was full of praise for the work of Quintion, saying Irish Dream was in prime condition on race day.

“He sent this mare out in fantastic order,” Schofield said.

“From a jockey’s perspective she was well tuned, on the mark and she ran accordingly.”

It was the sixth career of Irish Dream’s career and it is unclear whether she will race on into the 2012-13 season or be retired to stud.
