Winter Stakes 2012 – Eagle Farm Race Preview

May 29th, 2012

The Group 1 Winter Stakes is set to take place at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 23, 2012.

Run over a distance of 1,400 metres, the 2012 Winter Stakes is worth $500,000 in prize money.

The race, which is also known as the Tattersall’s Tiara, is open to fillies and mares only and is run under weight-for-age conditions.

Soft Sand is currently on a path towards the 2012 Winter Stakes this Brisbane Racing Carnival.

She was originally due to run in the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap, however, trainer Colin Little will likely opt for a barrier trail instead.

“I don’t really want her to run in the Stradbroke but I’d like to give her a go going the Brisbane way so I will probably have to investigate a trial,” Little said.

The three-year-old filly won her first-up start in the ALH Group Plate at Caulfield last weekend and is in top form going into the 2012 Winter Stakes.

The Dansili filly has won four of her seven race starts and has earned more than $200,000 in prize money.

A 2012 Winter Stakes win would be the first Group 1 win for Soft Sand, who finished second in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield on February 25, 2012.
