Gerald Ryan is excited about the prospects he has in work for the start of the 2011 / 2012 season however before he gets to that he wants to claim Sydney’s final black type of the season, the Winter Stakes.
His contender is Break Card, a horse that would no doubt feature predominantly in betting should it get a start, something Ryan is refusing to either confirm or rule out.
He’s given himself a couple more days to decide as he wants to make sure the horse has fully recovered from his last run.
Break Card ran third at Randwick on Saturday and Ryan is unsure how she will handle a quick seven day back up.
“She will be nominated and I’ll monitor her over the next couple of days before I make a final decision,” Ryan said.
“She went terrific yesterday from the outside gate. I just wish she could draw an alley.”
She does probably have another run in her though given that she didn’t contest the Civic Stakes last week due to drawing a bad barrier.
A possible start in the Winter Stakes is just one thing Ryan has to worry about at the moment though as he also readies Fast Shanti and Schiffer for their spring preps.
They will have barrier trials this week and Ryan hopes he can get a better guage on what type of future they may offer.
So far the signs are all good with Fast Shanti having a barrier trial earlier in the year for an impressive victory.
Having said that she’s yet to have a race start and perform when it really counts.
At one stage she was even said to be a Golden Slipper contender however she didn’t develop quite quickly enough and shin soreness meant those plans were shelved in favour on focussing her as a three year old.
Schiffer on the other hand has had a race start, in fact she’s run three times over the summer.
On debut she ran second behind Karuta Queen who was in top form and eventually won the Gold Coast Magic Millions.
From there she moved on to Randiwkc where she beat home Benfica, the Darley runner which ended up winning the Group 1 TJ Smith in Brisbane less than a month ago.
She went to the Magic Millions herself and ended up coming home third so judging by what she’s already shown the sky is the limit for this exciting talent.
“She’s come up terrific, she had a good break after the Magic Millions,” Ryan said.
“She will probably kick off in the Rosebud qualifier at Warwick Farm on the 23rd then go to the Princess Series races.
“Fast Shanti might go there too or perhaps to a midweek.
“She obviously has to earn some prize money to get into the better races and Schiffer does too because most of her $250,000 is from the Magic Millions and doesn’t count.”
The ultimate goal at the end of the Princess Series would be the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m in October.
Brnton Avdulla has been booked for both horse’s trials as he tries to build up a relationship for his own benefit in the spring.
They will trial at Hawkesbury away form their Sydney base as Ryan is in favour of starting them out on good ground.
“The trials tracks in Sydney have copped a hammering and I’d like to see them on a better track,” he said.
Hopefully by then he will have a clear path determined for Break Card, she would be a big asset to the Winter Stakes field and it would be a fantastic way for Ryan to end the 2010 / 2011 Stakes season.
