2011 Winter Stakes – Final Field & Barrier Draw

June 22nd, 2011

The 2011 Winter Stakes will run as the final feature of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival this Saturday June 25, 2011, with the final field and barrier draw for the race being released today.

The 2011 Winter Stakes is a 1,400 metre race open to fillies and mares only.

Worth $500,000, the Group 1 Winter Stakes is run under standard weight-for-age conditions.

15 horses have accepted to be part of the 2011 Winter Stakes final field, including Kelso Wood’s Zero Rock.

Zero Rock has once again been unlucky in the barriers, drawing barrier 10.

Wood had hoped that his mare would finally draw an inside gate, after being narrowly defeated in her last three runs due to bad barriers.

“That would be ideal,” Wood said earlier this morning about the potential of drawing a low barrier.

“It’s going to be a hard race and it would be good to have everything in her favour when they are so evenly matched.

“(But) barriers come along and you can’t do what you want to do.”

With the unfavourable barrier to contend with once again, Zero Rock will have to be at her best to beat Beaded and Varenna Miss, which are the two horses that Wood rates as her toughest opposition.

“Beaded and the horse of Tony Noonan’s (Varenna Miss) goes all right too,” Wood said.

“But there’s about five or six chances.”

In more horse racing news Peter Snowden’s Beaded has drawn barrier three for the 2011 Winter Stakes, which is this year known as the Tattersall’s Tiara.

Beaded will be ridden by jockey Corey Brown and will carry 57 kilograms in this Saturday’s Winter Stakes.

Also in the 2011 Winter Stakes final field is Peter Moody’s Returntosender.

Returntosender will be looking for her second win this preparation after she finished a disappointing tenth in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 4.

The five-year-old mare has drawn barrier five for the 2011 Winter Stakes and will be ridden by top jockey Luke Nolen.

Also included in the 2011 Winter Stakes final field are Gai Waterhouse’s Montana Flyer, Stuart Webb’s Yosei and Matthew Smith’s Hurtle Myrtle.
