The Group One Winter Stakes is the final feature race of the Brisbane winter carnival of racing. It will be held at Eagle Farm racecourse on the 25th of July 2011.
The Winter Stakes is a 1400m weight for age race, open only to fillies and mares. Some of the stars of the turf have taken out this race including Melito last year, Miss Potential in 2004 and Dane Ripper in 1997.
This year another filly or mare will go down as a Group One hero.
Peter Snowden has said that he would be aiming Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded at the Winter Stakes. Whether or not she starts may depend on how well she travels in the Stradbroke Handicap.
Varenna Miss is another that is likely to be aimed towards the Winter Stakes. The Tony Noonan trained mare ha a wonderful record against her own sex and would be considered amongst the top chances in the Winter Stakes.
The traditional lead up races for the Winter Stakes are the Lady of the Turf Stakes (1350m) and the Dane Ripper Quality (1400m)
The Lady of the Turf Stakes was renamed the Glenlogan Park Stakes this year, but the quality field of fillies and mares remained. Kanzan won the race and appears likely to be headed to the Winter Stakes. Other talented fillies and mares going from the Glenlogan Park Stakes to the Winter Stakes could include Zero Rock, Returntosender, Alverta and Culminate.
The other traditional lead in event to the Winter Stakes is the Dane Ripper quality. The Dane Ripper will be the first stop for the interstate fillies and mares who plan to go on to the Winter Stakes. Some of the interstate horses that will race in the Dane Ripper and then possibly the Winter Stakes include Palacio De Cristal, Dane Julia, Hurtle Myrtle and dual Group One winner Yosei.
