Nominations For The 2010 Winter Stakes

June 21st, 2010

This Saturday, the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival comes to an end as the Eagle Farm Racecourse hosts the last day of racing in the form of the Winter Stakes Day.

Headlining the proceedings will be the Group 1 Winter Stakes (1400m), which has seen 20 fillies and mares nominated for the 2010 running.

Stradbroke Handicap runner up Melito will surely be a favourite for the 2010 Winter Stakes.

With eight races forming the card, the Winter Stakes is the last group race of the season and worth a half a million dollars.

This year, Anthony Cummings is setting his sights on culminating a fantastic season with a Winter Stakes win from either Prima Nova or Messenger.

The Randwick-based trainer has won five elite status races so far this season, capping a career best which would be heightened with yet another on Saturday.

Prima Nova came second in last year’s Winter Stakes, and has only jumped once at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival this year when she finished seventh to Set For Fame in the Dane Ripper Stakes.

Messenger will be making her debut performance at the Brisbane carnival this Saturday, with the duo heading to the breeding barn after the campaign.

Winner of the Dane Ripper Stakes Set For Fame, will certainly be one to watch on Saturday, when she overcame other Winter Stakes nominees at the Eagle Farm Racecourse, with Acquired finishing second.

Stradbroke Handicap runner up Melito will surely be a favourite for the 2010 Winter Stakes, as the three-year-old could not have come closer to the top spot at Eagle Farm had it not been for a fantastic finish by Black Piranha.

Also racing at Eagle Farm on Saturday will be the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup Handicap (2200m) and the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes Handicap (1200m).
